Reading practice at home does not need to be long. What matters most is creating a calm, understandable activity that can be repeated regularly.
A few simple principles:
- practise for short periods regularly rather than for a long time occasionally;
- pronounce sounds clearly;
- allow the child to try before helping;
- encourage attempts, not only correct answers;
- finish before the child becomes too tired;
- combine reading with play, pictures and conversation.
With Colored Letters, the colours can be used as reminders of how letters sound. As the child becomes more confident, the letters and words themselves can gradually take centre stage.
