Colored Letters is a method to help children crack the reading code. Colored Letters provides extra visual support at the beginning of reading instruction.
The method has been used and evaluated in Swedish preschool settings. In language, there are many more sounds than letters, which means the alphabetic principle does not work one hundred percent. This can sometimes make it challenging for children to start reading.
Difficulties can arise because speech sounds are represented by letter symbols, which sometimes must be combined or changed depending on the context.
Colored Letters makes the invisible connection between letters and sounds visible using colors! The colors act as visual cues that help the child connect to the correct sound. This can make it easier for the child to try reading more types of words.
The core of the method
The heart of the method is a unique sound map where letters are placed in a system of regular combinations that children find easy to navigate. By singing these combinations, children get a playful introduction to how they sound and look.
The method is designed to give the child a secure and positive start. With the help of the sound map and colors, the child can more easily navigate among different letter sounds, providing extra support in decoding.
The colors are a temporary support. The goal is for the child to move on independently and gradually leave the colors behind to read regular black text.

The Colored Letters method originated in Sweden, where it has been developed and refined over many years. Rooted in the Swedish pedagogical tradition, we combine innovation with practical experience.
Our company, Alegor AB, is based in Stockholm. From here, we work to spread the joy of reading to children in Sweden and the rest of the world. Being close to our home market allows us to develop the materials close to our home market and offer personal service.
